Dental Implants - What are they?

What is a Dental Implant? Watch this Video....

The parts of a dental implant which forms a “tooth”.

Dental Implant

The Implant

A Dental implant is a small titanium or titanium alloy fixture, which is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthesia.

Titanium is a biocompatible metal without any “rejection”, and is accepted quite well within the bone tissue without any foreign body reaction from the body.
Dental Implant Abutment

The Abutment

The implant, once healed, carries a small tooth like analogue.

This is called “abutment”.

Dental Implant

The Crown

A tooth coloured crown goes on top of this abutment.

Once done, the implant is ready to function as a tooth

“Why do I need implants? What different options I have? Where do I start?”

A short answer is “thorough dental examination.” Any treatment planning without this stage is probably likely to face serious issues.

Thorough examination also involves useful diagnostics like x-rays and 3-D scan.

Once this stage is achieved, treatment planning should involve and explain different stages and/or options, with comprehensive discussion leading to informed decision making.

At Perio’Plant we believe every case is different, with customisable treatment needs.

These two videos from our implant suppliers (Astratech, Dentsply-Sirona & Straumann) would provide you further insight.

“Can I have implant at the same time tooth is coming out?”

“How is dental implant placed?”

“How long do they last?” “Implants for Life?”

There are many different solutions with their merits and limitations. Treatment planning and discussion should provide you objective, unbiased evaluation of each option. Dental implant is not just limited to a single tooth loss but can be used for missing multiple teeth or even full arch solutions.

A specialist with years of experience in surgical placement of dental implants can help you plan your case further.
